Puerto Aventuras is a small private marina community on the coast road south of Playa del Carmen, roughly halfway to Tulum. It is quiet, gated and largely residential, and for our purposes it is one thing above all: the best-equipped charter base on this stretch of coast.
Everything we run here leaves from the marina, and it is all private — catamarans and motor yachts rather than shared group trips. The range is unusually wide for one harbour: small day boats for a family, mid-size catamarans with cabins and several bathrooms, and one large catamaran rated for the kind of numbers that mean a wedding or a company day. If you are staying anywhere between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, this is almost certainly where your boat day starts.
The water here is calmer than the open coast further north, because the reef sits close in. Boats run north along the shore, out to the reef, or down toward Paamul and the bays below it — the route is set with the captain on the day rather than sold as a fixed itinerary.
Getting to the marina is straightforward: it is directly off Highway 307, about twenty minutes south of Playa del Carmen and forty-five from Tulum. There is a security gate at the entrance; give us the names in your party when you book and you will be expected.

Puerto Aventuras sits directly off Highway 307 — about twenty minutes south of Playa del Carmen, forty-five from Tulum, and a little over an hour from Cancún airport by road. Taxis and private transfers run to it constantly; there is no need to hire a car for a boat day.
It is a gated community, so the entrance is a security checkpoint rather than an open road. Give us the names in your party when you book and the marina will be expecting you. Allow ten minutes for the gate and the walk to the dock, and plan to arrive a little before your departure time rather than on it — a charter that leaves late comes back late.
When to come
Boat weather here is good most of the year. The calmest, clearest water is generally November through to about April, which is also the busiest stretch and the one worth booking earliest. Summer is hotter and wetter but the sea is warm and the mornings are often flat.
Hurricane season runs from June to November and peaks in September and October. Direct hits are uncommon, but a storm passing anywhere nearby will cancel boats — watch the forecast if you are travelling in those months, and travel insurance is worth having.
Sargassum, and why it matters less here
The seaweed that lands on this coast in some years is a beach problem, not a boat problem. It arrives in drifts roughly between spring and late summer, varies enormously from year to year and week to week, and nobody can promise you a clear beach months ahead.
What we can say is that it rarely affects a charter. You are leaving from a marina rather than wading off a beach, and once you are offshore or at the reef it is generally not a factor. If it is bad the week you are here, a boat day is usually the best water you will get.
Time of day
Mornings are the better half of the day on the water. The sea is typically flattest early, and the wind tends to build through the afternoon. If you have a choice, take the earlier slot — and if you are prone to seasickness, take it without question.
