The three work as a set because they are not the same kind of cenote. Gran Cenote, on the Cobá road just outside Tulum, is half open water and half cavern, shallow and clear enough that small turtles are usually visible without going deep. Taak-bi-ha is fully enclosed — a cave with stalactites reaching the water, reached down a staircase. Xunan-Ha is the open swimming one.
Going privately matters most at Gran Cenote, which takes coach groups from late morning. Starting there early and working inland is the difference between having it to yourselves and queueing for the steps.
