The pairing is the point: a cave cenote is cold, still and completely enclosed, and Akumal is warm open sea over seagrass. Doing both in a day is the clearest way to understand why this coast is unusual.
Akumal bay holds a resident population of green turtles feeding on the seagrass beds. Entry is regulated — guided groups, life jackets, and no touching — which is why turtle numbers there have held up while other bays have thinned out. A guide is not an upsell here; it is a condition of entry.
Taak-bi-ha first, while the light is still low and the cenote is empty, then Akumal for the afternoon.
