Tulum is the only major Mayan site built on the sea, and the walled section sits on a low cliff above the beach. It is also almost entirely without shade, which decides the order of the day: ruins first, early, then water.
Taak-bi-ha is fifteen minutes inland — an enclosed cave cenote reached by staircase, cold enough to be a genuine relief after a morning on the cliff.
Private transport from Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum. From Cancún this is a long day, and starting early is not optional if you want the site before the coaches.
