Chichén Itzá — Group and Private Tours

Chichén Itzá takes around two and a half million visitors a year, and almost all of them arrive between ten and one. That single fact decides which version of this day is worth booking — far more than the vehicle does.

The real choice: shared coach or private vehicle

The group tours run on a coach with a fixed departure, a set schedule and a guide shared across the bus. They are the cheapest way to go and perfectly good if you do not mind arriving with everyone else. The tiers above Classic buy comfort on the journey — drinks, waiter service, a better lunch — not a different experience at the site.

The private tours buy the one thing the group tours cannot: the clock. The site opens at 08:00. Leave the coast at 06:00 and you walk in as it opens, with an hour before the coaches arrive. That hour is the difference between photographing El Castillo and photographing the crowd in front of it. Between the three private options the only real difference is the vehicle.

Coming from Cozumel

It can be done, and people do it — but be clear about the length. From Cozumel it is the ferry to Playa del Carmen, then roughly two and a half hours by road each way. Starting early enough to beat the coaches means a first ferry, and you will not be back before evening. If you are on the island for only a few days, ask us honestly whether it is the best use of one of them.

Practical

There is very little shade on the site and the walking is on uneven stone. Climbing El Castillo has not been permitted for years. Bring more water than you think, and a hat that stays on.
